Beyond the 3G iPhone

The arrival later this year of the 3G iPhone will luckily usher in a new era of high-end smart phones, with greater power and faster speed that make better use of Wi-Fi connections. That’s according to an interview published in the Wall Street Journal with Joel Espelien of the software company Packet Video.

Espelien saysthat various recent developments in the industry, especially the next iPhone, Nokia’s embrace of Wi-Fi, and Google’s Android platform, point to a future where 3G phones are ubiquitous. This means the phones will have greater ability to handle music, video, and web-browsing, in addition to voice calling.

As for technologies of the future, Espelien sees phones becoming digital libraries, as well as on-demand and even two-way video on mobile phones.
