Jena, Germany—Carl Friedrich Zeiss was born in the German city of Weimar on September 11, 1816, and the company he founded, Zeiss, is celebrating his 200th birthday by organizing activities and events. In addition to Carl Zeiss Day on September 11, 2016 in downtown Jena, Germany, there will also be a touring exhibition and a book.

Carl Zeiss, a mechanic, opened a small workshop for precision mechanics and optics in Jena in 1846, laying the foundation for today’s global technology company, Zeiss. “His work shaped the reputation of the city of Jena as an international center for optics and photonics and home to globally operating companies and prestigious research institutes,” said Jörg Nitschke, senior vice president, Corporate Communications, Zeiss.

The company will celebrate its prominent founder with participants from the city of Jena, the Zeiss sites in Germany and abroad, and partners from science, industry and society. The company is providing an event calendar of the planned birthday celebrations at zeiss.de/carlzeiss200.
