San Diego, CA—Sony’s new flagship, aluminum-built Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 compact camera inherits many advanced imaging features from the company’s Alpha A-mount and E-mount interchangeable-lens cameras—including Full HD video recording and an advanced level of manual control and creativity.

“This camera is ideal for travel, portraits or street photography, delivering impressive results in a variety of lighting conditions with an intuitive, customizable control interface,” said Yosuke Tomoda, director of Sony Electronics’ Cyber-shot business. “It’s a perfect step-up model for point-and-shoot users not interested in larger DSLR or compact system cameras, and also an outstanding choice for enthusiasts who may already own a large DSLR and are looking for a high-quality, pocket-sized ‘all-in-one’ second camera.”

At the heart of the Cyber-shot RX100 is “the world’s first 1.0-inch type Exmor CMOS sensor with a resolution of 20.2 effective megapixels,” added Tomoda. Specially developed by Sony, the sensor has an area that’s approximately four times larger than the 1/2.3-type sensors in most traditional point-and-shoot cameras. The sensor’s larger area takes in more light to capture detailed images and Full HD movie clips with very low noise.

Sony also equipped the RX100 with a bright Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* fixed lens with 3.6x optical zoom and a wide f/1.8 maximum aperture to let in additional light. Similar to DSLR optics, the lens uses a seven-bladed circular aperture to help capture subjects in sharp focus against a smoothly blurred, defocused background.

Also optimized to complement the 1.0-inch type sensor and lens is a Bionz image processor that extends sensitivity up to ISO 25,600, allowing for handheld images in low light. And to capture fast-moving subjects, the RX100 shoots at 10 frames per second (full resolution) and has high-speed autofocus that locks onto a subject in 0.13 sec.

Other features include: a 3.0-inch 1,229k-dot LCD that uses WhiteMagic technology to boost screen brightness; a lens control ring that can be used to alter exposure, zoom, creative picture effects and customizable functions; frequently used functions can be assigned to the Fn (function) button for access; a choice of auto and manual focus modes; six creative styles and various picture effects, like toy camera and HDR painting; and the new auto portrait framing function found on Sony’s latest Alpha A-mount and E-mount system cameras. This feature automatically detects faces in a scene, crops the picture to create a tighter, pro-style composition at full resolution, with both the original and cropped photos saved.

Sony’s Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 will be available in July for $650. sony.com
