Commack, NY—Tamron introduced the Tamron 17-35mm f/2.8-4 Di OSD (model A037) ultrawide-angle zoom lens for 35mm full-frame DSLR cameras. A separate concept from the SP 15–30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD (model A012), the new portable lens is just 3.5 inches in length and weighs 16.2 ounces. As a result, Tamron is marketing the lens as “the smallest and lightest in its class.”

The lens’s focal length ranges from an ultrawide 17mm, suitable for landscape photography, to a standard 35mm for snapshot photography. Moreover, at the wide-angle end is a large f/2.8 aperture, and at the telephoto end is a fast f/4. It also boasts moisture-resistant construction and fluorine coating.

The new lens’s optical construction (15 elements in 10 groups) uses four LD (low dispersion) lens elements to minimize axial chromatic aberrations that can occur with ultrawide-angle zoom lenses. Moreover, with two GM (glass-molded aspherical) lenses, it corrects distortion and other aberrations. The lens also allows peripheral point image reproducibility to facilitate sharpness and contrast.

In addition, the minimum object distance (MOD) for the entire zoom range is 11 inches. As a result, background blurring is still possible when opening the aperture and approaching the subject close-up.

The use of advanced coating technology along with proprietary ghosting analysis simulation technology is another key feature. Together they enable a high level of backlighting control. Model A037 employs Tamron’s BBAR (broadband antireflection) coating to reduce reflection and control ghosting and flare throughout its zoom range.

Furthermore, its autofocus (AF) drive system uses an OSD (optimized silent drive) to help ensure quiet operation. Tamron also improved AF performance and speed. Thus, AF can be employed without worrying about noise creation.

The lens’s 7-blade diaphragm retains a smooth, circular-shaped aperture opening, even when stopped down by two stops from wide open. This produces a smooth-edged bokeh in background light spots and avoids rugged aperture geometry.

Moreover, for shooting in adverse weather, there are seals at the lens mount area and other critical locations to prevent infiltration of moisture and raindrops. In addition, a protective fluorine compound with water- and oil-repellent qualities is coated on the surface of the front element. Therefore, the front surface is easier to wipe clean and less vulnerable to the damaging effects of dirt, dust, moisture or oily fingerprints.

Compatibility with Tamron TAP-in Console

Model A037 is also compatible with the optional Tamron TAP-in console. This accessory provides a USB connection to a personal computer, enabling users to update a lens’s firmware as well as customize features, including fine AF adjustments.
