Commack, NY—Tamron launched the Tamron 17–28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD large aperture, ultrawide-angle zoom lens for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras. Model A046 features a filter diameter of Ø67mm as well as a light weight of 14.8 ounces. Moreover, it has a length of 3.9 inches.

“The compact size provides excellent balance on the small profile mirrorless cameras and is easy to carry,” the company announced.

Tamron 17–28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD Highlights

Sharing the same development concept as Tamron’s 28–75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD that launched in May 2018, model A046 boasts high optical performance in a form factor that is light and compact. Moreover, its overall length does not change when zoomed or during focus. In addition, with a filter diameter of 67mm, it uses the same lens cap and filters as its sister lens.

The 17–28mm zoom consists of 13 lenses in 11 groups. They include three aspherical lens elements, two LD (low dispersion) elements and one XLD (eXtra low dispersion) element with properties close to those of fluorite. Together they suppress chromatic and other aberrations. In addition, Tamron’s BBAR (broad-brand antireflection) coating reduces ghosting and flare. Moreover, the lens matches the latest high-resolution image sensors from edge to edge throughout the zoom range.

Suitable for capturing landscapes, architecture and casual snapshots, the lens’s extreme close-up capability enables creative expression with ultrawide-angle zoom. In fact, the MOD at the 17mm wide position is 7.5 inches while the maximum magnification ratio is 1:5.2. At the 28mm end, it achieves a maximum magnification ratio of 1:6 with a MOD of 10.2 inches.

Furthermore, its AF drive incorporates a sensor that detects the position of the lens while the RXD motor unit optimizes AF control. The result is quiet, fast, accurate autofocus operation, allowing users to maintain focus on moving subjects or when filming video. In addition, the compact configuration of the RXD AF drive system contributes to the lens’s size and weight reduction.

Additional Features

Environmental seals are located at the lens mount area and other critical locations to prevent infiltration of moisture and/or rain. As a result, the moisture-resistant construction provides an additional layer of protection when shooting in adverse weather conditions.

Also, the front surface of the lens element is coated with a protective fluorine compound with water- and oil-repellent qualities. This makes the lens surface easier to wipe clean and less vulnerable to the damaging effects of dirt, moisture or oily fingerprints. Tamron-Logo-cropped-2-2017The lens is also compatible with many of the advanced features specific to certain mirrorless cameras. They include: fast hybrid AF; eye AF functions; direct manual focus (DMF); in-camera lens correction (shading, chromatic aberration, distortion); as well as camera-based lens unit firmware updates.

In addition, the lens has a zoom ring at the front and a focus ring at the rear. It also sports a luminous gold brand ring and a rigid metal lens mount.

The Tamron 17–28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD ships July 25. It will have a retail price of $899.
