Cupertino, CA—LaCie the premium brand from Seagate Technology, upgraded its Rugged external hard drive with faster speeds, a tougher design and an integrated interface cable. Its housing now features improved shock, dust and water resistance.

The upgraded Rugged hard disk is MIL-compliant, which means that data is protected even during accidental drops of 6.6 feet. During transit, users can attach the removable cover to provide IP 54-level protection against dust and water. The SSD version goes a step further with resilience against vibration and shock. Included software protects files from prying eyes with AES 256-bit encryption.

Plus, its integrated Thunderbolt cable stows when not in use, to ensure that it will never get lost or left behind. And the LaCie Rugged now features fast transfer speeds thanks to its Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 interfaces. With the SSD version, the drive delivers up to 387MB/sec, allowing photographers and videographers to transfer 100GB in less than five minutes, with zero lag when accessing files, viewing photos or editing videos. The hard disk version performs at speeds of 122MB/sec, which is a 35% improvement over FireWire 800.

Because USB 3.0 is backward compatible, users can connect it to any standard computer. The LaCie Rugged is also fully bus-powered through the USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt cables.

The LaCie Rugged, which is designed by Neil Poulton, comes with a three-year limited warranty in the following capacities: 1TB (terabyte), $219.99; and 2TB, $299.99. The 250GB SSD retails for $299.99 and the 500GB SSD for $499.99. lacie.com
