Melville, NY—Canon USA announced a new flagship model in its EOS Rebel line—the EOS Rebel T5i digital SLR camera—as well as the EOS Rebel SL1, which is being marketed as “the world’s smallest and lightest DSLR camera” with an APS-C-size sensor.

The Rebel T5i employs an 18 megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor and Canon’s Digic 5 image processor, which combine to offer an ISO range of 100–12,800 (expandable to 25,600 in H mode) to help produce detailed images even in low-light conditions, as well as a 5-frames-per-second (fps) continuous shooting speed.

“Built to make advanced photography creative and fun, the EOS Rebel T5i digital SLR camera gives users exceptional image quality and fast, intuitive operation along with creative functions to help advance photographic expression,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications, Canon USA.

Its hybrid CMOS autofocus system has nine cross-type AF focus points, and when shooting in live view mode, it enables fast autofocus for both photos and video. When used with the new EF-S 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6 IS STM lens, available in the standard kit, the Rebel T5i takes advantage of Canon’s Stepping Motor (STM) technology, which was developed to allow the lens to smoothly, silently focus on the subject even when it’s moving.

Also featured is a high-res vari-angle 3.0-inch Clear View II touch-screen LCD monitor and intuitive touch controls to access the camera’s creative functions. Whether adding saturation to a landscape or applying a vintage touch to a portrait, users who want to express their creativity can experiment using one of seven creative filters and preview the effects on the LCD monitor. Effects include art bold, water painting, grainy black and white, soft focus, toy camera, fisheye and miniature. Plus, a new mode dial with scene modes was added, permitting users to select the subject matter while the camera determines the optimal settings.

To take creative imaging further, more advanced shooters can use handheld night scene, HDR backlight control or multi-shot noise reduction modes; with the latter, multiple images are taken and combined in-camera to help create the best quality image.

The EOS Rebel T5i also shoots 1080p Full HD video in a number of recording sizes and frame rates—utilizing Canon’s hybrid CMOS AF system and movie servo AF to provide continuous focus tracking of moving subjects. This helps reduce the camera’s need to “hunt” to record quick, smooth continuous AF. While recording using one of the STM lenses, the camera will only capture the stereo sound of the scene being recorded. A built-in stereo microphone with manual audio level adjustment is also included.

The EOS Rebel T5i is scheduled for April release, with an estimated retail price of $749.99 for the body alone, $899.99 bundled with an EF-S 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6 IS STM kit lens, and $1,099 with the EF-S 18–135mm f/3.5–5.6 IS STM lens. The EF-S 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6 IS STM lens will be available separately for $249.99.

EOS Rebel SL1.
This Rebel DSLR incorporates a newly developed 18MP CMOS (APS-C) sensor and Digic 5 processor in a body that measures 4.6×3.57×2.74 inches and weighs 14.36 ounces. In comparison, it is 25% smaller and 28% lighter than the EOS Rebel T4i.

“The EOS Rebel SL1 digital SLR camera represents a new era in DSLR versatility: ultraportable, full-featured DSLR cameras,” added Yuichi Ishizuka. “The EOS Rebel SL1 combines the high speed, high image quality and expanded shooting range of a DSLR camera with the easy and fun usability of a point-and-shoot camera.”

For shooting in both bright and dimly lit environments, the SL1 offers an ISO range of 100–12,800, expandable to 25,600, for photos and ISO 6400, expandable to 12,800, for video. It has a four-frames-per-sec shooting speed and a nine-point center cross-type autofocus system that includes a hybrid CMOS AF II sensor. This is said to result in a wider focus area when shooting photos or video in live view mode.

Video features also include Canon’s movie servo AF, which provides continuous AF tracking of moving subjects. When recording video with one of Canon’s STM lenses, such as the EF-S 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6 IS STM that comes in the standard kit, movie servo AF takes advantage of the lens’s stepping motor to help achieve smooth, quiet continuous AF. The camera is capable of Full HD recording in various sizes and frame rates, and it enables manual control of exposure, focus and live view features.

Other features include: a 3.0-inch Clear View II touch-screen LCD monitor with intuitive touch-panel operation (two-finger touch gestures can be used for zooming, changing images, accessing menu and quick control settings and activating focus point and shutter release while shooting); scene intelligent auto mode, which detects faces, colors, brightness, movement, contrast, distance and other factors and automatically adjusts the exposure method needed; the new effect shot mode, which automatically creates one shot with a selected creative filter and one without; the ability to display creative filter and background blur simulation effects in real time during live view shooting; in-camera editing and cropping functionality; and a variety of scene modes.

Canon’s EOS Rebel SL1 DSLR also ships in April, for an SRP of $649.99 body only or $799.99 bundled with the EF-S 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6 IS STM kit lens. usa.canon.com
