DSLR Dust Be Gone

With all the talk focused on DSLRs of late, a couple of companies have taken advantage of the buzz to introduce new dust removal technologies. As you undoubtedly are aware, some of the major DSLR manufacturers have introduced an in-camera vibration method for dealing with dust build-up on the senor inside these cameras. We also told you about FotoNation’s in-camera software solution in last week’s Clique. A company called Green Clean USA recently brought an out-of-camera solution to the party.

The Green Clean Solution is dubbed Digital Camera Sensor Cleaning System, and the company tells us this solution works on the vacuum principle, “to gently remove dust and friction particles from the sensor and camera housing.” The system consists of the Mini Vacuum, a 10 oz. Vacuum Power Canister, 3 sterile Pick Up vacuum tubes, 3 Wet and 3 Dry sensor cleaning Swabs and an Anti-Static Polishing Cloth. The one-way Pick Up tube was developed specifically, they tell us, for use on reflex digital cameras. The Pick Up connects to the Mini Vacuum and consists of abrasion-free and non-conductive plastic material that does not contain any softeners. The Wet Swab is pre-soaked in cleansing solution which is non-toxic and non-flammable, but does have a high degree of grease solvency. The dirt dissolved in the solution is lifted off by using the Dry Swab. The Dry Swabs’ projecting textile edges clean directly into the corners of the sensor and the pre-treated fabric allows, what the company claims is streak-free cleansing of the entire sensor surface. It’s nice to see the industry addressing a problem that was sure to grow in scope as the DSLR category is undergoing a changing of the guard with regard to the demographic that is now buying this product.
