Writer/photographer Pierre Jonqueres is October’s Instagram photographer. “I’m passionate about nature and wildlife,” says Jonqueres. “I live in South Africa at the gate of the Kruger National Park. I’m blessed to be able to spend every day in the bush tracking wild animals. Any sighting of wildlife is a must. Attitude, lighting and setup are never the same.

“I have a penchant for the big cats. They’re fascinating to observe. Meeting them is always a privilege. The lion population is decreasing drastically. Lions are vulnerable and considered an endangered species. Many efforts are going toward their conservation. I just pray it will pay off as soon as possible.

“When the sunset brings its warm color behind the oldest lioness (Panthera leo) of the Mazorini pride, this matriarch leads her group for the long night. Winning their prey or losing the hunt: they don’t have an easy task, but it is their way of survival.”
