Cologne, Germany—After intensive consultation, Koelnmesse GmbH has canceled photokina 2020, which was planned for May 27–30, 2020. The next photokina, a leading international trade fair for photography, video and imaging, will occur May 18–21, 2022.

Moreover, the management of Koelnmesse decided not to organize any of its events until the end of June 2020. Further, the crisis management team of the City of Cologne supported the decision; it also recommended in its meeting on March 18, 2020 to cancel all trade fairs during this time period.

As a result, the Imaging Innovation Conference will not celebrate its premiere in 2020 as originally planned; they are currently coordinating a new date.

Koelnmesse considered several factors when deciding not to host the next edition of photokina until May 2022. Even before the appearance of the coronavirus, the imaging market was already subject to strongly dynamic movements. The show’s organizers believe this trend will now gain momentum and will also factor into plans for the upcoming photokina. photokina-2018-entry photokina 2020Added to this is the fact that the resources of photokina’s customers are already under a heavy strain through 2021, as a result of general economic trends. The new 2022 date gives everyone time to design the next photokina with an eye to the needs of the market; as well as photokina’s exhibitors and visitors.

In addition, the show’s organizers considered the uncertainty of numerous customers and the complicated travel situation. Against this background, they believe it is currently not possible to offer a global business and community platform for the imaging industry in the usual quality.

“It goes without saying that PIV completely stands behind the decision taken by Koelnmesse to cancel photokina 2020,” commented Kai Hillebrandt, chairman of the Photo Industry Association (PIV). “The health of exhibitors and visitors is top priority at the moment. As the conceptual sponsor of photokina, we will do our utmost to assist the Koelnmesse with the planning of the next edition of photokina.”
