Torrance, CA—Mayor Frank Scotto, members of the Torrance City Council, members of the Torrance Chamber of Commerce, local photographers, businesspeople and representatives from the photographic industry, including Canon, Leica and Nikon, were on hand to celebrate the grand opening of the Creative Photo Academy at Paul’s Photo on November 16. The academy is located at 23845 Hawthorne Boulevard in Torrance, adjacent to Paul’s Photo.

Paul Comon, president and founder of Paul’s Photo, and Mark Comon, vice president of Paul’s Photo and founder of the Creative Photo Academy, hosted the ceremony. Mayor Scotto cut the ribbon to officially open the new facility at the gala event.

The Creative Photo Academy features two state-of-the-art classrooms where photographers can learn in a traditional classroom environment with how-to instruction and hands-on workshops where they learn by doing. The classrooms also serve as a product and portrait studio for the teaching experience as well as for use by local professional photographers.

In addition, the Creative Photo Academy Gallery will showcase the talents of local photographers, academy students and the community through monthly photographic exhibits. It currently features the work of the El Camino College Photography Department and the images of David FitzSimmons and his Curious Critters.

A lifelong dream of Mark Comon, the Creative Photo Academy was built as a place for photographers of all ages, skill and interest levels to gather, share and grow in the photographic arts. It offers classes in how to use your camera, creative photographic techniques, and computer editing, enhancements and digital printing. Academy students will be able to participate in photo walks to scenic South Bay locations, bus tours to photograph Southern California’s photogenic venues, and photo excursions to National Parks as well as other photographic destinations.

The opening of the Creative Photo Academy and the recent remodeling of Paul’s Photo have been heralded in the business and photographic press as a “true success of a brick-and-mortar store excelling in this day of digital photography, big-box stores and online ordering.”

Paul’s Photo was founded in 1961 and has served the South Bay community ever since. Winning the prestigious Best of the Beach in the Easy Reader every year since 1988 and the highly competitive Best Camera Store as Best of the South Bay in the Daily Breeze every year since 1988. Paul’s Photo was also selected as Photo Industry Reporter’s 2012 Camera Store of the Year. paulsphoto.com
