Arlington, VA—The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) announced a series of new awards and events for the 2014 International CES, including the Breakthrough of the Year Awards, Engadget Best of CES Awards and the UP Global LIVE Stage. Owned and produced by CEA, the 2014 CES will run January 7–10, 2014 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“CES represents the promise and power of technology and these awards and events are another impactful way we curate the show to highlight the many facets of innovation,” said Karen Chupka, senior vice president, events and conferences, CEA. “CES continues to innovate along with the dynamic technology industry we represent and these awards and events bring to life the hands-on experience that is CES.”

Among more than 20 specialty awards programs and events that will be featured at CES, such as the CEA MoDev Hackathon, Mobile Apps Showdown and Last Gadget Standing, new highlights include:

Variety’s 2014 Breakthrough of the Year Awards. This unique red carpet event, held January 9, 2014, will celebrate a diverse range of talent. From the fields of film, television, sports, music, comedy, technology, philanthropy and social media, innovators and pioneers will be presented with awards live onstage in the Las Vegas Hotel (LVH) Theatre. The show will include live musical and comedic performances beginning at 7:30 p.m. Red Carpet begins at 6:30 p.m.

Engadget Best of CES Awards.
Engadget will coordinate, judge and produce the official “Best of CES” awards. Engadget’s senior editors will cast votes for nominees based on innovation, quality of design, overall efficiency and market demand. Nominees will be announced online and on the Engadget podcast on January 8, and winners will be revealed onstage in the Las Vegas Convention and World Trade Center (LVCC), Grand Lobby on January 9.

UP Global Live Stage.
Building on the success of the Startup America Partnership during the 2013 CES, UP Global Live will showcase the start-up community, facilitate connections and provide four days of programming in Eureka Park. UP Global Live will feature panels with iconic entrepreneurs, VCs, media and other young companies. Unique programming, office hours, pitching and networking will be featured at this Eureka Park destination.

Repeat favorites include:
CEA MoDev Hackathon.The exclusive on-site developer event of CES, 100 of the top mobile developers in the world will compete for up to $100,000 in available cash and prizes on the world’s most important technology stage. Developers will have eight hours to develop an app in one of four available prize categories as determined by the first four category sponsors to commit to the event. Ten technology sponsors will also be offering a total of $50,000 in additional prizes for apps that utilize their APIs, platforms and services and meet their judging criteria. The event will take place at the Venetian Hotel, level 4, on January 7, 2014. The Venetian will accommodate developers and sponsors and serve as the official HQ of the event.

Mobile Apps Showdown. App producers will have four minutes to demo their app, and an applause-o-meter measures audience enthusiasm to determine the winner. There is also an online vote to determine a separate online winner. Guest emcees Gary Dell’Abate and Jon Hein from the SiriusXM channel are slated to host the event, which takes place on January 9, 12:30 –2:00 p.m., at the LVCC, North Hall, Room N255.

Last Gadget Standing. A perennial attendee favorite, Last Gadget Standing challenges contenders to give the product demo of their lives. At stake: bragging rights as the product “most likely to change the face of technology.” Cohosts and fellow techies Gary Dell’Abate and Jon Hein from SiriusXM Radio will once again bring their wit and knowledge of all things geek to the festivities. They’ll also lead a trivia contest. The event will be held on January 9, 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., at the LVCC North Hall, Room N255.

CES Hot Stuff Awards. Stuff, a best-selling gadget magazine, is back at the 2014 CES to announce the fourth successive CES Hot Stuff Awards, showcasing the 10 most desirable, most exciting and most innovative products to launch at the show. Stuff's international team of editors will be considering newly launched products from every category in order to unearth the very best that the show has to offer. The 2014 CES Hot Stuff Awards will be announced online at Stuff.tv at 5 p.m. PST on January 8.

CEA Best Shots Photo Contest.
Once again CES attendees can help select the winning photos in the CEA Best Shots photo contest, sponsored by CEA’s Digital Imaging division in partnership with Olloclip and Independent Photo Imagers. Photos selected for the final judging round will be on display for public voting during CES in the Experience CEA booth in the Grand Lobby. Winning photos will be announced at the close of CES.
