The CEA/CNET measure of consumer confidence for April delivered a mixed verdict, finding that confidence in the overall economy is down, but that confidence in the consumer electronics sector is at its highest level of the year.

The CEA-CNET Index of Consumer Expectations (ICE) dropped from March to April, but the level of 168.5 was nevertheless a three-point improvement over the number from April 2008. Meanwhile, the Index of Consumer Technology Expectations (ICTE) jumped 10 points from March to 77.4, which is also an improvement over the same time last year.

“While tax season may have caused some consumers to be more careful with their personal finances, they are still looking to spend disposable income on technology and CE,” Anne Claudio, Vice President of Research for CNET parent company CBS Interactive, said as part of the announcement.

“The ICTE showed that consumers are more likely this month to buy consumer electronics and spend more on those products than last month. We are hoping the increase in the CE confidence index will result in positive returns for manufacturers.”
