Melville, NY—Nikon unveiled eight Coolpix compacts, including three high-power super-zoom cameras: the Coolpix P500 with a 36x zoom, the longest zoom ever integrated into a Coolpix; and for consumers who want a slim zoom or affordable telephoto, the Coolpix S9100 and L120.

Whether capturing photos or HD video up close or from afar, Nikon’s super-zoom P500 compact is complete with a 36x zoom, while the S9100 packs an 18x zoom in a sleek body ideal for traveling and the Coolpix L120 combines a 21x zoom with easy operation.

“Today’s consumers want an increase in zoom range, and a camera that is compact enough to never hinder a jet-set, on-the-go lifestyle. Nikon listened, and offers the best of both worlds with these three new Coolpix models,” said Bo Kajiwara, director, Marketing, Nikon Inc. “These three new Coolpix models offer the shooting versatility that comes from the stellar Nikkor lenses while still offering the portability of compact digital cameras.”

At the core of this trio are Nikon’s Nikkor lenses and Expeed C2 digital image processing engine, which is custom-optimized for each Coolpix model. With functions like scene auto selector, best shot selector and Nikon’s smart portrait system, the Coolpix lineup is designed to help even inexperienced photographers take beautiful photos, added Kajiwara.

Coolpix P500. Employing a 36x wide-angle optical Zoom-Nikkor ED glass lens, Nikon calls its P500 an “ultra-telephoto premium compact.” From shooting super-wide-angle 22.5mm to 810mm (35mm equivalent), it’s engineered to perform even in low-light conditions, thanks to the 12.1 megapixel backside illumination CMOS sensor.
A Coolpix first, it incorporates the Expeed C2 dual image processor, developed to enhance performance, reduce noise and correct distortion in both movies and still images. It also utilizes a hybrid vibration reduction (VR) stabilization system comprised of image-sensor shift VR and electronic VR, and to further combat the effects of camera shake, an additional zoom control was added to the side of the lens barrel to increase stability while shooting hand-held.

The P500’s sensor allows the capture of five images at full resolution in one sec, and it includes backlighting scene mode with a high dynamic range (HDR) function, which merges images of the same scene at different exposures to achieve one image with a broad range of tonal detail. For additional low-light performance, night landscape mode combines a series of shots taken at a fast shutter speed into a single image with reduced noise. Additionally, night portrait mode combines consecutive images of the background while the subject is captured using the flash for night and indoor scenes.

Other features include: a 3.0-inch LCD: a shooting mode button to facilitate quick setting of continuous frame shooting, in addition to the pre-shooting cache that starts to snap photos before the button is fully depressed; Full HD (1080p) movie recording with stereo sound and autofocus, and the ability to capture still images during recording; slow motion or high-speed special effects while shooting video; and panorama mode, which automatically creates panoramas with a choice of directions and angles.

The Coolpix P500 will be available in March for an MSRP of $399.95 and will come in black or red.

Coolpix S9100. Sporting the most compact body of the trio, the S9100 has an 18x wide-angle Zoom-Nikkor ED glass lens with a range from wide-angle 25mm to super-telephoto 450mm. It also features a 12.1MP backside illuminated CMOS sensor, ISO sensitivity to 3200, backlighting scene mode with HDR, night landscape and night portrait modes and hybrid VR.

Users can compose stills and Full HD (1080p) movies on its 3.0-inch high LCD monitor with an enhanced user interface. A mode dial is also provided for setting of frequently used functions. Here, too, easy panorama mode and a variety of special effects for photos and movies are included. The Coolpix S9100 ships in March for $329.95 and will be offered in black, red and silver.

Coolpix L120. Marketed as a family camera, the L120 features a 21x wide-angle Zoom-Nikkor glass lens with side zoom control, 14.1MP, a 3.0-inch LCD, hybrid VR image stabilization and high sensitivity to ISO 6400. It also has an easy auto mode that automatically selects the appropriate scene mode by framing the subject, 720p HD video with a one-touch control button, pet portrait mode that helps capture the expressions and actions of dogs and cats automatically, and AA battery operation. It comes in black, red and bronze. $279.95. nikonusa.com
