Cologne, Germany—Panasonic Corporation announced that it is developing a digital single-lens, mirrorless camera that’s capable of recording 4K 60p/50p and 4:2:2, 10-bit 4K video “for the first time in the world.”

The Lumix DMC-GH5, which is built on the Micro Four Thirds format, is scheduled for an early 2017 release.

The mirrorless Lumix GH5 also debuts the new “6K Photo” function. This upgraded feature extracts 18 megapixel (MP) still images from ultrahigh-quality video. This video has approximately nine times the pixel count of Full HD video.

The company reaffirmed that it has been committed to the development of innovative digital cameras under the theme “Create a new photo culture in the digital era” since 2008. By advancing Panasonic technologies, “such as digital signal processing and heat dissipation, and packing them into the compact, lightweight body of a digital single-lens mirrorless camera, the Lumix GH5 enables 4K 60p/50p and 4:2:2 10-bit 4K video recording, which has never before been achieved,” the company announced.

Lumix GH5 Upgrades

In the Lumix GH5, the company’s previous 4K Photo function is advanced to form 6K Photo technology. This upgrade allows users to cut a still image out of 18 megapixel video that has nine times the pixel count of Full HD video.

Taking advantage of the camera’s high-speed burst shooting capability, spur-of-the-moment shots can be saved in photos with higher resolution. This resolution complies with larger-sized printing. The resolution is increased from 8 megapixels in 4K Photo to 18MP with 6K Photo. Furthermore, approximately 8MP 4K Photo can now be captured at 60 fps.

Panasonic’s Lumix DMC-GH5 was exhibited at photokina 2016 show together with the new Leica DG Vario-Elmarit f/2.8–4.0 lens series. The lens series includes three new lenses. They are a 12–60mm standard zoom lens, an 8–18mm wide-zoom lens and a 50–200mm telephoto zoom lens. panasonic.com
