Melville, NY—Canon USA introduced three compact and lightweight Full HD camcorders: the Canon XA15 and XA11 professional models and the Vixia HF G21 for enthusiasts and hobbyists. With Canon optics, enhanced sensors and a range of features, the three camcorders are suitable for a range of video productions.

“The ability to capture high-quality video on the go in a compact and lightweight form factor is extremely valuable to videographers of all skill levels,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon USA, Inc. “These camcorders were designed to help professionals and enthusiasts who are in the field capture action as it happens.”

The Canon XA15, XA11 and Vixia HF G21 Full HD camcorders each provide videographers with a 20x, 26.8–576mm-equivalent optical zoom lens. The lens is engineered to allow users “to easily capture a variety of scenes with superb image quality,” Ishizuka added. It additionally provides a minimum object distance of 23.6 inches.

The lens is also engineered to enhance image quality with an 8-blade circular aperture design. This also helps to avoid the starburst effect of point light sources in non-circular aperture designs. Moreover, out-of-focus areas are claimed to be “smooth, natural and appealing.”

In addition, an endless-type focus and zoom control includes user-programmable direction and sensitivity modes. And zoom speed can be set to a variable or constant (with 16 levels) speed setting, with fast, normal or slow zoom speed levels.

Canon’s HD CMOS sensor and advanced Digic DV4 image-processing platform are said to deliver in low light. They also make possible the ability to capture Full HD images in 60p at 35Mbps. In addition, the camcorders’ wide DR mode supports the smooth compression of high luminance areas to achieve 600% DR. As a result, it’s possible to shoot with smooth color gradation and suppressed overexposure. This is applicable to any shooting environment where the difference between light and dark areas is prone to causing overexposure, noted Ishizuka.

Moreover, creative expression is supported by a slow/fast segment function that enables users to select shooting speeds from 0.4x to a maximum of 1,200x.

Additional Features of HD Camcorders

The camcorders record in AVCHD and MP4 formats at multiple bit rates, simultaneously, to dual SD card slots. Furthermore, all three camcorders offer HDMI output, a headphone jack and optional GPS support. In addition, the XA15 and XA11 models offer XLR professional audio terminals. The XA15 camcorder also features a HD-SDI output.

Each camcorder employs a 3-inch, 460K-dot LCD capacitive touch screen and a .24-inch tiltable electronic viewfinder. The Vixia HF G21 provides a mini accessory shoe to attach optional accessories. They include a video light, directional stereo microphone and 5.1-channel surround microphone.

With compact and lightweight bodies, the camcorders are geared for high-action shoots where both speed and mobility are essential. Another key feature, dynamic mode provides 5-axis image stabilization—roll axis, horizontal roll, vertical roll, up-down and left-right—to help facilitate smooth image capture in various styles of fast-paced shots.

The Vixia HF G21 camcorder is identical to the XA15 and XA11 models in performance.  However, it does not include a handle.

The Canon XA15, XA11 and Vixia HF G21 Full HD camcorders are available for $1,899, $1,399 and $999, respectively. usa.canon.com
