Irvine, CA—WD, a Western Digital company, expanded its WD Red Pro and Black hard drive lines with 5-terabyte and 6TB capacities.

“WD is providing customers a full portfolio of high-capacity NAS storage solutions (WD Red and WD Red Pro) for home, consumer and business NAS solutions,” said Cindi Grace, senior vice president of WD storage technology group. “With the capacity expansion, there is now a path for customers to increase the storage density of their systems while knowing their data is protected with the most trusted and valued brand on the market.”

WD Red Pro.
For NAS (network attached storage) systems having up to 16 drive bays, WD Red Pro 5TB and 6TB drives leverage an enhanced design and 128MB cache to deliver data transfer rates of 214 megabytes per second (MB/s). The drives’ NASware 3.0 firmware was developed to promote data protection, high NAS performance and reliable integration.

Equipped with a multiaxial shock sensor, WD Red Pro drives automatically detect subtle shock events. This works with dynamic fly height technology to adjust each read-write function to compensate and protect the data, further protecting the drive in 1- to 16-bay NAS environments.

Also featured is hardware vibration compensation technology that monitors the drive to correct linear and rotational vibration in real time. This increases the drive’s reliability in higher vibration systems caused by drive-to-drive vibration or from high-speed fans used to cool larger systems.

With a five-year limited warranty, WD Red Pro drives have suggested retail prices of $269 for the WD Red Pro 5TB drive and $299 for the 6TB version.

WD Black.
For creative professionals, enthusiasts and gamers, the WD Black hard drive line now offers a 6TB capacity. The 3.5-inch drive combines 7,200 RPM spin speed, 128MB cache, dual stage actuator technology, and a SATA 6 gigabit per second (Gb/s) interface. With a dual-core processor, the WD Black 6TB is up to 29% faster than the previous WD Black 4TB version in maximum data rate throughput and 10% faster in PCMark Vantage.

Other features include: StableTrac technology that secures the motor shaft inside of the hard drive to increase reliability and help reduce impact due to system-induced vibrations from other components; and Dynamic Cache technology to improve caching algorithms in real time to allocate and optimize cache between reads and writes.

Also backed by a five-year limited warranty, the WD Black drives have the following SRPs: 5TB, $264; 6TB, $294. wd.com
