OWC Adds ThunderBay 4 Mini: Speedy, High-Capacity Storage for 4K Uncompressed Video

2015

Woodstock, IL—Other World Computing (OWC), a zero-emissions Mac upgrade and storage technology company, released ThunderBay 4 mini and ThunderBay 4 mini RAID 5 edition, which are engineered to allow users to easily transport data between production environments with a portable, professional-grade Thunderbolt 2 RAID solution.

Optimized for 2.5-inch drives, the ThunderBay 4 mini delivers performance for demanding applications, such as workflows for 4K, 2K, uncompressed HD and multi-stream SD video.

“Our new ThunderBay 4 mini is perfect for mobile workflows involving demanding applications and large mission-critical files,” said Jen Soulé, OWC’s president. “The combination of RAID-ready capabilities and Thunderbolt 2 technology makes working with large 2K and 4K files easier, faster and more flexible and affordable than ever before. Now users can get big performance in a small footprint—all in a portable, production-grade 4-Bay enclosure.”

Key ThunderBay 4 mini features include: four 2.5-inch drive bays; Thunderbolt 2 performance with sustained speeds up to 1,284MB/sec; RAID-ready with up to 4TB of SSD storage (HDD up to 8TB); near-silent operation; SoftRAID 5—the first software RAID 5 for Mac (available with ThunderBay 4 mini RAID 5); the flexibility to combine multiple ThunderBays into a single massive RAID array; and regimented multi-hour drive “burn-in” for reliability.

Powered by the SoftRAID engine, the ThunderBay 4 mini RAID 5 edition is engineered to deliver advanced RAID modes, real-time health monitoring with e-mail notifications and fast rebuild speeds. Unlike traditional software RAID solutions, SoftRAID’s volume optimization permits uses to quickly configure the drive for specific workflows—whether for recording audio, editing 4K video or creating a multimedia server.

With RAID 5, the four drives inside ThunderBay 4 mini are merged for increased capacity and performance gains over a single drive. Special redundancy data, called “parity information,” is also stored across the drives, allowing data to remain safe so users can maintain mission-critical workflows worry-free.

OWC’s portable ThunderBay 4 mini comes with a meter, a certified Thunderbolt cable, a set of keys for front panel lock, a user guide and a utility software bundle (Mac and PC).

The ThunderBay 4 mini and ThunderBay 4 mini RAID 5 edition are available in various configurations from 500GB to 8TB. The 8TB ThunderBay 4 mini with hard drives retails for $895; the 4TB version with SSDs retails for $2,399. macsales.com
