Melville, NY—Nikon added the portable Nikon 1 J5 to its Nikon 1 system of compact interchangeable-lens cameras. Designed for photographers who want to creatively capture and share their passions, the J5 features fast, continuous, full-resolution shooting at 20 frames per second (fps) with full autofocus; a new 20.8 megapixel backside-illuminated (BSI), 1-inch, CX-format CMOS sensor; the Expeed 5A image processor; and creative modes.
Users can also utilize the experience of Nikon Snapbridge: they can seamlessly shoot and share photos from the camera to a compatible smartphone or tablet via built-in Wi-Fi and Near Field Communication (NFC) technology.

The Nikon 1 J5 incorporates advanced features that help make it simple to capture fast-moving subjects in stills or Full HD video. Thanks to its Expeed 5A engine, the J5’s impressive full-res, 20-fps burst rate with autofocus (AF) can capture high-speed action, and it can reach up to 60 fps with AF fixed on the first frame. The camera also provides and equally impressive fast hybrid AF system with 171 contrast-detect and 105 phase-detect AF points to further achieve and maintain focus on tough-to-photograph subjects.
Nikon also introduced a new sports mode with intuitive preset settings to help optimize focus when capturing a “photo finish” at the racetrack or a last second “buzzer beater.” And, according to its specs, the camera also utilizes “the world’s shortest release time lag to practically eliminate shutter delay” for those moments when time is of the essence.
At the heart of the newest addition to the Nikon 1 system is a 1-inch, CX-format 20.8MP BSI CMOS sensor engineered to render finer detail than ever before with the J-series, while allowing for cleaner images at higher ISOs. When the light is challenging, the J5 has a built-in flash and a wide ISO range from 160–12,800 that will help capture the shot, even in the absence of available light. For extreme low-light situations, a high ISO noise-reduction function captures and stacks four frames simultaneously to help reduce noise when shooting at 6,400 and 12,800.
Also new is the J5’s control layout that puts physical controls and creative modes at the photographer’s fingertips. Manual controls and PSAM exposure modes are accessible via the mode dial, while the command dial allows settings to be changed quickly. A programmable function button helps access often-used functions.
Key features include: a 3-inch, 1,037K-dot touch LCD display with a 180º tilt to navigate an enhanced menu system, frame shots and make focus point adjustments; a new self-portrait mode to set skin softening, self-timer and exposure compensation using the touch interface; creative modes and scene modes for stills and video, including seven new effects—sepia, pop, retro, high-contrast monochrome, fisheye, skin softening (stills) and cross screen (stills); and 1080/60p Full HD video recording as well as at 120 fps (720p) to create slow motion playback.
Users can apply creative tools to any movie, including jump-cut, fast-motion, 4-second movie and time-lapse movie mode that captures up to 300 stills and replays them as a 10-second sequence. An interval timer was also added, allowing up to 999 images to be recorded in intervals between 5 seconds and up to nearly 100 minutes to create time-lapse movies via external software. Plus, the Nikon 1 J5 can capture 4K video at 15p for those who want to experiment with higher resolution video clips.
