Los Angeles, CA—The Lucie Foundation announced that David Clarke, former head of Photography at the Tate Gallery in London, will chair the Lucie Foundation Advisory Board, effective immediately. Clarke succeeds Dr. Anthony Bannon, director of the Burchfield Penney Art Center and former head of George Eastman House.

“I am so excited to explore new avenues expanding the international element of the Lucie Awards, casting a net as far and as wide as possible, highlighting the best photography has to offer. To this end, I support the appointment of board members with expertise in a wider international forum,” said David Clarke. “I plan to examine the possibilities of bringing new categories to the awards. These will include my own sphere of experience, Cultural Heritage, an area largely unrecognized, and to demystify its diverse and complicated nature.”

Clarke has photography in his blood. For 30 years his father was an organic chemist with Kodak in Liverpool, making dyes for transparency film. He built his 9-year-old son a darkroom, taught him to print, and the rest is history. Clarke has been a professional fine art photographer for more than 30 years.

He studied Fine Art at the Wigan School of Art and Illustrative Photography at Manchester Metropolitan University. In 2014 he finished a 20-year tenure as head of Photography at the Tate Gallery.

His projects included a digitizing and publishing initiative for the vast Tate collection of more than 90,000 works of art. He also planned, managed and launched the project to digitize 50,000+ works from the Tate Archive, Transforming Tate Britain: Archives & Access, making the archives interactive with the Tate Collection and accessible to the public.

“The enthusiasm I have for a person of David’s qualifications and stature, who is well studied and possesses a global point of view, to lead the board into the future, is ideal for the next phase of the Lucie Foundation and the Lucie Awards,” said Cat Jimenez, executive director of the Lucie Foundation. “We heartily welcome David—who we first got to know as our 2014 International Photography Awards Competition Best of Show guest curator—to the chairmanship of the board.”

Founder’s Remarks

Hossein Farmani, founder of the Lucie Awards, also commented. “To say that I am excited to see the Lucie Foundation, and by extension, the Lucie Awards, have this opportunity to grow to an even more global platform with a world-view board chair, is an understatement. We welcome David Clarke with open arms and once again thank Anthony Bannon for his years of dedicated service.” luciefoundation.org
