Los Angeles, CA—A move back to Los Angeles, a new moving images category for the International Photography Awards (IPA) and the launch of a biannual magazine highlight the 2012 Lucie Awards celebration. The 10th Annual Lucie Awards, produced by the Lucie Foundation, will take place on October 8, 2012 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Beverly Hills, CA, at 6:30 p.m. Tickets go on sale July 8 at lucies.org

The Lucie Awards celebrate achievements in photography globally. This year, the gala returns to the site of the first Lucie Awards, the Beverly Hilton, where the Lucie Foundation and the global photography community will recognize this year’s honorees and the winners from the 2012 International Photography Awards juried competition—the foundation’s sister effort.

New this year, as both still and moving images have become integral to so many assignments, IPA has included the new IPA Moving Images category. Professional, emerging and student photographers will be eligible to submit cohesive moving image pieces, including short films, music videos and slideshows. The winner, selected from the professional and emerging entrants, will receive a $2,500 cash prize.

“We are so excited to be returning to the same venue where it all began 10 year ago. This year’s honorees highlight how far the Lucies have come in such a short yet historical time. With the introduction of the new IPA category and the publication of the first Lucie Foundation magazine, we mark a very special milestone,” said Cat Jimenez, executive director of the Lucie Foundation.

An extended deadline for all IPA entries is July 16, 2012 (11:59 p.m. PDT). Winners of IPA will receive recognition at the 10th Annual Lucie Awards as well as a Lucie statue and cash prizes. IPA will award a $10,000 cash prize for the International Photographer of the Year Award provided by AtEdge; a $5,000 prize for the Discovery of the Year Award; and $5,000 to the Deeper Perspective Photographer of the Year. Winning work will be displayed in the annual Best of Show exhibition, which will debut during Lucie Week and then travel internationally.

Additionally, the first issue of the new Lucie Foundation magazine, a journal of contemporary photography, will debut during Lucie Week this October and will include top finalists from the IPA competition and this year’s honorees. It will be distributed free of charge through galleries, studios, labs, advertising agencies and the like. The spring issue will publish in April during MOPLA (Month of Photography LA) in 2013.

The Lucie Awards, whose winners will be announced shortly, are the culmination of a weekend of events leading up to the big night, including the IPA’s Best of Show exhibition and party and the Lucie Honoree Lectures.

Support categories for the Lucies also recognize those in the creative community who are integral in crafting an image in the following categories: Print Advertising Campaign of the Year, Fashion Layout of the Year, Photography Magazine of the Year, Book Publisher of the Year, Exhibition/Curator of the Year and Picture Editor of the Year. And a special tribute to photographers who have passed away in late 2011 and 2012 will be showcased alongside several new video compilations.

“I am so proud that the dream of the Lucie Awards has inspired the growth of the foundation to include year-round programming. It has been such a fruitful first 10 years. The return to the Lucies’ birth city, Los Angeles, for the 10-year anniversary is particularly apropos,” added Hossein Farmani, founder of the Lucie Awards. lucies.org
