Turners Falls, MA—Savvy photographers know they need to adapt and do it quickly, as the demand for HD video increases everyday. To answer this need, the Hallmark Institute of Photography is offering the Intro to DSLR Video for the Professional Photographer Weekend Workshop, March 17-18, 2012.

Simplicity and adaptation will be the overall theme of this class; through demonstrations, discussions and hands-on exercises participants will learn the technical aspects of video capture, including camera setup, frame rates, picture profiles and white balance. The workshop is designed to provide a solid technical foundation, creative inspiration and demonstrate how to start producing professional video without a lot of special gear and/or new software.

Through exercises in metering, focusing and exposure techniques, photographers will learn to adapt their skills to video capture. Additional exercises in lighting and camera movement in Hallmark’s production studios will show how to apply creative skills to the art of video/filmmaking. Audio will also be discussed and demonstrated, including dual system audio and syncing in post.

Workflow, file management and editing options will be demonstrated. iMac workstations will be provided for these demonstrations. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own cameras and gear, but equipment is not required. Hallmark can provide cameras and all the accessories necessary for a successful workshop experience.

The workshop’s instructor, Dennis O’Clair, has spent more than 25 years providing imagery for advertising, corporate and editorial clients. He also produces stock photography and stock footage for Corbis, Cultura and Getty Images. Since the introduction of the Canon 5D Mark II, O’Clair has thoroughly embraced the HD video capability of this camera and has concentrated on perfecting his video and filmmaking skills. He is currently the video and filmmaking instructor at Hallmark Institute of Photography and is actively involved in several documentary film projects.

The workshop will be held at Hallmark’s newly created Video Production Suite, located in Turners Falls, Massachusetts. The nearly 5,000-square-foot facility includes an editing lab, a dedicated audio recording studio and a video production studio. Equipment includes Canon 5D Mark II cameras, Zacuto viewfinders, Manfrotto and Benro video heads, iKan location monitors, Rode microphones, Zoom H4n recorders, Cinevate accessories and sliders, Profoto, Lowel and iKan lighting, 24-inch iMac computers and Final Cut Pro Studio.

The cost of the weekend workshop is $450, which includes lunch both days. For ASMP, APA, ASP, PPA or WPPI members and Hallmark alumni, the cost is $400 . http://hallmark.edu
