Las Vegas, Nevada—DIR’s January 2017 Tech Trends focuses on virtual reality capture devices. As virtual reality (VR) headsets increase in popularity, the ability to capture personal still and video content in 360º will drive sales of image capture devices.

Currently, 360º-capable imaging devices account for less than 1% of combined point-and-shoot camera and camcorder dollar sales.

Despite this, the market has grown more than 10 times over the last 12 months (ending October 2016). This is a result of VR consumer products increasing in both popularity and availability.

Leading the market is Ricoh Imaging with its line of Theta S cameras, followed by 360fly and Kodak PixPro.—Ben Arnold, Executive Director, Industry Analyst, The NPD Group
