Shapiro Touts Tech Checklist

CEA President/CEO Gary Shapiro last week was named a "Titan of Technology" by the Northern Virginia Technology Council, and delivered a speech to the group in which he assailed the government for a host of policy disagreements. These included trade, taxes, spending and immigration policy.

"We need to step back and take a ‘first do no harm’ approach to further legislative action,” Shapiro said in the speech. “If there are more stimulus packages they deserve hearings and public vetting. We need the best ideas America has to offer.” Shapiro has recently been making similar arguments in speeches and op-ed pieces, including one in the Huffington Post.

Shapiro also announced a new initiative called the CEA Innovation Checklist, which asks six questions of those receiving them, whether industry executives or politicians. Those considering legislation are asked to consider six questions: whether it 1)creates jobs, 2)spurs new technology, 3) welcomes the best and brightest to the U.S. and 4) rewards risk taking, 5) promotes exports, or 6) helps deploy broadband.
