Melville, NY—Canon USA’s new flagship PowerShot G1 X Mark II point-and-shoot camera, for professional and advanced amateur photographers, is now available at retail. Boasting a sensor that is 4.5x larger than a 1/1.7-inch sensor found in professional-level P&S cameras, the G1 X Mark II features a new type of 1.5-inch, 12.8 megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor made by Canon.

With an ISO range of 100–12,800, the sensor combines with the Digic 6 image processor to comprise Canon’s HS system, said to provide faster autofocusing speeds over the G1 X camera and enabling the capture of detailed images even in low light.

Employing a newly developed f/2.0–3.9, 5x optical zoom lens (24–120mm equivalent) with a nine-blade aperture for enhanced bokeh and dual control rings, the P&S provides customized zooming and focus-functionality similar to a DSLR camera. Photographers can isolate their subjects by separating them from a background that is artistically blurred. In addition, the dual control rings include a step ring to adjust various customizable settings and a continuous ring to make focusing adjustments during manual focus, as well as additional customizable settings for manual shooting.

“The new high-end PowerShot G1 X Mark II camera delivers incredible, professional-level shooting capabilities in a compact camera body making it the ideal second camera for DSLR shooters,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications, Canon USA. “In addition, with the introduction of advanced wireless capabilities such as NFC and enhanced low-light shooting and autofocusing, the G1 X Mark II is a well-rounded professional-level camera that allows photographers to get creative.”

The PowerShot G1 X Mark II has a default aspect ratio of 3:2, which is the same ratio the advanced user has come to expect when shooting with a DSLR. If the photographer wants to switch to a 4:3 ratio, it can be done without impacting the field of view. Also, the camera uses 31 autofocus (AF) points, compared to the PowerShot G1 X camera that has nine AF points, resulting in improved autofocus capabilities.

Other features include: a capacitive touch, 3.0-inch LCD that tilts 180º up and 45º down; compatibility with Canon’s optional electronic viewfinder that mounts to the hot shoe; background defocus mode, which softens the background behind a subject to help users create professional-looking portraits; a dedicated movie button to capture 1080p Full HD video; a full range of shooting and recording modes, including 14-bit RAW + JPEG; and advanced star mode with four options (star portrait, star nightscape, star trails and star time-lapse movie) to capture images of starry night skies.

Also notable is the camera’s built-in Wi-Fi, which enables users to share photos and videos online quickly via compatible mobile devices; a mobile device connect button that connects to a smartphone, tablet or Wi-Fi enabled computer; Near Field Communication (NFC) to transfer photos to a compatible Android device by tapping them together; and a remote shooting feature that syncs the G1 X Mark II with a smartphone/tablet and utilizes the shutter, optical zoom and self-timer features from that device.
