New York City, NY—Animoto, a leading online video creation service, added consumer technology industry leader Brad Garlinghouse to its board of directors. Garlinghouse is best known for his tenure on the executive management team at AOL, where he served as president of the company’s Mobile and Consumer Product teams.

Garlinghouse previously served as senior vice president of Communications and Communities at Yahoo!, where he authored the controversial Peanut Butter Manifesto, outlining his vision for Yahoo! to realize its full potential.

“I am thrilled to welcome Brad to our board of directors,” said Brad Jefferson, CEO of Animoto. “Brad shares our vision for inspiring people to share their lives using the magic of video. He has deep experience with the importance of web innovation in attracting and retaining a thriving user community and his insights will help take Animoto to the next level.”

At AOL, Garlinghouse led the company’s efforts to expand the global reach of its mobile and consumer products (such as AOL Mail and AIM). Prior to joining AOL in 2009, Garlinghouse was a senior advisor at Silver Lake, a private equity firm. Before that, he spent nearly six years at Yahoo!, most recently serving as senior vice president of Communications and Communities. Under his leadership, Yahoo! Mail went from number three to leading all competitors by a wide margin, and the company’s messaging service rose to become the leader in that market as well.

“Brad Jefferson has built an impressive management team and has a clear focus and vision for the next phase of Animoto and I’m thrilled to be a part of it,” said Garlinghouse. “There is vast opportunity in the social video and sharing space and Animoto is uniquely positioned to take advantage of it in a very aggressive way.”

In addition to Brad Garlinghouse, Animoto’s board includes: Brad Jefferson, CEO and cofounder of Animoto; Jason Hsiao, president and cofounder of Animoto; Ben Spero, managing director of Spectrum Equity; Matt Mcllwain, managing director of Madrona Venture Group; and Tom Yellin, cofounder, president and executive producer of The Documentary Group (formerly Peter Jennings Productions).

Animoto recently launched its free Animoto iPhone app, which enables users to create and share personalized videos from their photos, video clips, words and music—all on the go. animoto.com
